From Bourbon Street to Bourbon Country: Five Years Later

Five years ago, a local synagogue brought in four displaced musicians from New Orleans to play traditional classical New Orleans Jazz across the city. And for one weekend in 2005, the Louisville community gave them home and a place to play their music, away from the Katrina tragedy.

These nationally renowned musicians had fled Hurricane Katrina, leaving everything they owned including some of their instruments.

Businesses and organizations rallied to provide hotel accommodations and meals for the musicians, even a new six-string professional banjo. Mayor of Louisville, Jerry Abramson, presented the musicians with keys to the city.

Now, five years later, Congregation Adath Jeshurun is bringing back the legendary clarinet player, Dr. Michael White and his quartet of world-renowned musicians to raise money for the Gulf region.

Cantor David Lipp of Congregation Adath Jeshurun: “I was thrilled how the citizens and businesses in Kentucky supported and helped these musicians whose livelihood had been taken away by Hurricane Katrina. Now the Gulf region is being ruined again and we need to help.”

These musicians, who have performed in Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and across the world, will play at a free concert with dessert reception and Bourbon Tasting on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at Congregation Adath Jeshurun, 2401 Woodbourne Avenue, located in the Highlands.

The concert will start at 8:45 PM and will be taped for later broadcast on WFPK’s Kentucky HomeFront radio show with John Gage. The concert will also feature Harry Pickens and an original short story by Bob Sachs.
CD’s of Dr. White, Gage and Pickens will be available for purchase after the concert with the men available for signing.

Cantor Lipp: “Despite the hard economic times, we all desperately want to help this region. The charities are being carefully chosen to ensure that all the proceeds go to preeminent charities that provide the best care for both the residents of the area and the wildlife that are also being destroyed.”

All donations and sponsorships are tax deduction with the net proceeds going to The Gulf Oil Spill Fund, at the Greater New Orleans Foundation and the National Wildlife Federation’s “Gulf Oil Spill Restoration Fund”.
