HERE’S LOOKING AT YOU AJ

August 1, 2007

Many of us who have renovated or decorated a home know that it takes “a lot of looking by a lot of people” to find just the right “stuff”.  Well, that is also true about the new chairs the Renovation Committee just purchased for the synagogue.

The renovation committee acquired 19 different chair samples from several different manufacturers.  Each of the chairs were observed, tested, and evaluated by staff members and numerous congregants.  One of the manufacturers the committee found was Mity-Lite and they manufactured two chairs that the committee thought were good possibilities.  One of the chairs was a folding chair that would be used for dinners and the second chair was a stacking chair which would provide extra seating for the High Holy Days.  After a large amount of looking, sitting and talking the committee, by overwhelming consensus, agreed that those chairs were the best of all the others they had seen.  Fortunately, they were the right price and fit easily into the renovation budget.

John Chovan, the architect in charge of the renovation, evaluated the chairs for comfort, size, frame color and upholstery fabrics.  Mr. Chovan gave “two thumbs up” for both chairs and concurred with the committee’s choices of colors and fabrics.

600 stacking chairs and 350 folding chairs have been ordered and are scheduled to arrive on or before September 5, in plenty of time for Rosh Hashanah.  As a result of purchasing these new chairs, the synagogue will have a large quantity of existing blue upholstered folding chairs.  The committee is looking for other nonprofit organizations such as churches, synagogues, shelters, etc. who may want to acquire these chairs for themselves.  Some of the chairs are in need or repair, but many are in excellent shape and should be serviceable for many years to come. If you know of a charitable organization that might need some of our older chairs, please contact Robin Silverman at Rsilverman@AdathJeshurun.com.

So the first major purchase in AJ’s renovation process has taken place, and like all renovation projects, it takes a whole community to make the acquisition!  It is the first step and many more beautiful additions are about to come our way.  Here’s looking at your new chairs, AJ!

JULY 1, 2007

As we all probably know from renovating, building or just fixing up our own homes, coming up with a plan, keeping on a timeline and to a budget are the hardest elements to secure.  When one thing is finished, it just becomes more obvious that other things should be changed or added.  It is an endless project; that is unless you have a great architect and planner on your side. Adath Jeshurun has just that with John Chovan.

John Chovan is a well known and respected architect with Arrasmith, Judd, Rapp, Chovan, Inc.  He did his architectural training at the University of Cincinnati, achieving both a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and a Master’s in Community Planning.  He then went on to study Passive Solar Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass.

Prior to joining AJRC, Inc. in 1971, Mr. Chovan worked with Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill in Chicago, IL.  While at S.O.M., he worked as an architect/urban designer on projects that included the Sears Building in Chicago, The Wills Tobacco Headquarters in Bristol, England and The Downtown Urban Design/Development Master Plan in Elkhart, IN.

Since joining Arrasmith, Judd, Rapp, Chovan, Inc., Mr. Chovan has served as Project Architect on a diverse group of institutional, recreational, commercial and public use facilities including the Cardiovascular Innovation Institute, Louisville Hall of Justice, and the University of Louisville School of Business.  His work is characterized by close attention to his clients’ needs, open professional communication, innovative solutions to problems and high quality technical work.  Just what AJ needs to make our highly anticipated renovation project successful.

John will be finishing AJ’s renovation Master Plan and timeline within the month and will have sketches to show the congregation sometime in August.  We are confident that Mr. Chovan will create a thorough and well designed plan, timeline and budget.  We all have a house that we live in and a house that we worship in and we want both to be beautiful and functional.  For the latter, there is no doubt that John Chovan will help us reach our goal.
