Rosh Hashanah literally refers to the beginning of a new Jewish year. This holiday provides an opportunity for each of us to reflect and examine our actions from the preceding year.
At AJ we’ll kick off Rosh Hashanah celebrations with a New Year’s Eve party on Ley’l Rosh Hashanah. Observance of the holiday will continue on both Thursday September 29 (including Tashlich) and Friday September 30.

LEY’L ROSH HASHANAH Wednesday, September 28th 5:45 p.m. — Evening Service (open seating)
Since Jewish days begin in the evening, Ley’l Rosh Hashanah is the evening service.
ROSH HASHANAH — FIRST DAY Thursday, September 29th 9:00 a.m. — Traditional and Lay-Led Traditional Services 9:30 a.m. — Intergenerational Service
Rosh Hashanah is both a time of rejoicing and of serious introspection, a time to celebrate the completion of another year while also taking stock of one’s life. God’s rule over humanity and our need to serve God are stressed time and again over the course of the holiday.
ROSH HASHANAH — SECOND DAY Friday, September 30th 9:00 a.m. — Traditional Service 10:30 a.m. — Family Service
There will be two services on the Second Day of Rosh Hashanah. The Traditional Service will be held in the Shapira Sanctuary/Charles and Jean K. Erskine Auditorium and the Family Service will be held in the Switow Chapel. The Family Service will be led by Rabbi and Deborah Slosberg and is designed for children in grades 3 and higher to attend with their parents. Open seating will be available for all services
TASHLICH AT THE PARK Thursday, September 29th 12:00 p.m. & 1:00 p.m.
Two Tashlich Services at Big Rock After the conclusion of both services on the First Day of Rosh Hashanah, AJ members are invited to meet at Big Rock in Cherokee Park and participate in Tashlich (to cast or throw).
It is a tradition on Rosh Hashanah to go to a river or a stream to symbolically cast our sins into the water. Metaphorically, as the eyes of fish never close, so God always watches for our sins to be cast away. The Tashlich service is appropriate for members of all ages and is particularly meaningful to children.
Tashlich will take place twice at Big Rock in Cherokee Park. Meet in the Blue Family Garden entrance immediately following the First Day of Rosh Hashanah services. Rabbi Metzger will lead those who attend the Intergenerational Service to Big Rock at approximately 12:00 p.m. Rabbi Slosberg will lead those who attend the Traditional Services at approximately 1:00 p.m.
