Shabbat Scholars Yehudah Husband & Melanie Hughes

Saturday, June 22, 2024 16 Sivan 5784

12:30 PM - 2:00 PM

Join Shabbat Scholars Yehudah Husband and Melanie Hughes as they present "I’ve Got A New Name: An Intersectional Discussion on Juneteenth, Judaism and LGBTQIA+ Pride."

June is a month full of celebration. Two things we are recognizing and celebrating this month are Juneteenth, a Federal holiday commemorating the day in 1865 when 250,000 formerly enslaved persons in Texas were declared free by the U.S. Army (two years after the Emancipation Proclamation), and Pride, the annual celebration of LGBTQIA+ awareness and celebration that came out of the decades-long fight for queer equality. As minority groups who have struggled with historic and systematic oppression and hate, Jews have deep commonalities with African-Americans and LGBTQIA+ communities, and even more so for Black and Queer Jews. This discussion will feature a panel of Jews who will discuss intersectional Jewish identity, Jewish allyship and more. Come join us!

The Kiddush lunch will be sponsored by the Julie Olson Shabbat Scholar Fund.
