Naomi Shemer: Beyond “Jerusalem of Gold” taught by Cantor David Lipp

One session only! Monday, April 1 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. EST on Zoom

Israeli music owes a lot to the artist Naomi Shemer. In many ways, Shemer helped define the tone and trajectory of Israeli popular music. For example, the genre Shirei Eretz Yisrael (Songs of the Land of Israel) would be far poorer without this sui generis singer/song-writer. In this moving follow up to Cantor David Lipp’s hit course “Israeli Pop Jamz”, we get an overview of her lasting influence and legacy on the corpus of Israeli artistic expression. Join us for a rockin’ good class!

"Almost Lost in Translation: Five Jewish Stories from the Septuagint" taught by Dr. Melanie-Prejean Sullivan

Thursdays from May 9 until June 6, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in-person

Why is the Hanukkah story in some Bibles, but not the Tanakh?  What other stories of Jewish heroes and heroines (like Judith) or other gems of advice (from Solomon and Sirach) are out there?  Join us for a look through the Septuagint (A.K.A. "LXX" or Apocrypha) and discover what it might mean for us today.

This class will require an additional textbook. Please visit the registration page below for links to preferred editions.
